Mitchell D. Feldman, MD, MPhil obtained his B.A. from The Johns Hopkins University, an MPhil in social anthropology from Cambridge University, England and his MD and Internal Medicine Residency training at the University of California, San Francisco where he is Professor of Medicine. Dr Feldman is Associate Vice Provost, Faculty Mentoring, Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs; Co-Director, Mentor Development Program of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, UCSF; and co-Director of the UCSF Depression Center. Dr Feldman's current research is focused on mentoring in academic medicine and on psychiatric and behavioral issues in medical patients. Dr Feldman's other area of research interest is in the clinical and economic barriers to high-quality depression treatment in primary care. As principal investigator of the UCSF site of the Robert Wood Johnson national demonstration project "Depression in Primary Care", Dr Feldman and colleagues addressed the structural and financial barriers dictated by the mental health carve-out arrangement through an innovative economic and clinical partnership. He has been especially interested in examining the influence of patient prompts on physician behavior. He was co-investigator (and UCSF site PI) of an NIMH funded multicenter randomized trial of 150 primary care physicians that studied the impact of direct-to-consumer advertising and patient requests on physician's evaluation and treatment of patients with depressive symptoms. The lead manuscript from this project was recognized as the best research paper of the year by Academy Health and the Society of General Internal Medicine. Dr. Feldman was lead author on another analysis from this project investigating screening for suicide in patients with depression. This manuscript received widespread attention for highlighting that primary care physicians fail to screen for suicidality in the majority of depressed outpatients. He is currently extending this work with additional support from NIMH to develop targeted educational messages designed to reduce stigma and promote effective participation in care among adults at risk for depression.Dr Feldman is also the co-editor of the text Behavioral Medicine: A Guide for Clinical Practice (McGraw-Hill). He was recently named co-editor in chief of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
