Dec 22, 2014 White House Report Highlights Efforts of Women's HIV Program at UCSF

A recent government report highlights the efforts of the Women's HIV Program (WHP) at UCSF. The Office of National AIDS Policy and the Presidential Interagency Federal Working Group on the Intersection of HIV/AIDS, Violence against Women and Girls, and Gender-Related Health Disparities discussed the efforts of the WHP in their recently released report.

The report cites WHP's research "describing an effective intervention to help women living with HIV safely and voluntarily disclose their HIV status" as a means to reduce isolation and increase self-efficacy to leave or avoid abusive relationships. The report also recognizes WHP's national leadership to develop a new, more effective, trauma-informed approach to primary care by highlighting collaborative projects with SAMHSA, the NIH, and the Women’s Research Initiative.

Director Edward Machtinger, MD, states The Women's HIV Program (WHP) at UCSF is recognized as a key national leader innovating responses to trauma in the context of primary care. Dr. Machtinger had provided testimony at the White House in the development of the inaugural 2013 Working Group report about the intersection of violence against women and HIV.
