Mar 12, 2014 Nat Gleason, M.D., Awarded 2014 CHQI ROI Scale-Up Fellowship

Dr. Gleason's proposal: "Scale-Up of The E-Referral & E-Consult Program" was selected for funding by the University of California Center for Health Quality and Innovation.

The program provides PCPs with point-of-care decision support on referral appropriateness (eReferral platform), and allows PCPs to receive timely specialist recommendations on clinical questions that do not require an in-person evaluation of the patient by the specialist (eConsult).

Introduced in 2012 at UCSF, the program was widely adopted by PCPs with a significant impact on referral rate and specialty care access time. Dr. Gleason proposes to implement the program across the primary care practices at UCD, UCLA, and UCSD for 14 total specialties.

For well-suited clinical questions, an eConsult represents a rare triple-win, providing timely care to the patient, supporting the PCP with dynamic access to specialist expertise, and improving total value to the system. The program supports the work of both the PCP and the specialist, and fosters the integration of primary care and specialty care.
