Dr. Bindman is Professor of Medicine, Health Policy, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He is also the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at UCSF's affiliated San Francisco General Hospital and Director of the University of California Medical Research Institute. Dr. Bindman has published more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles on access to primary medical care, health outcomes associated with barriers to primary care, and the evolving role of primary care physicians and safety net providers in US health care system. Dr. Bindman has practiced and taught primary care at San Francisco General Hospital and its affiliated clinics for more than 20 years.

Andrew D. Auerbach MD MPH

Dr. Auerbach is Associate Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the Primary Care Research Fellowship. A Hospitalist at UCSF, he was the site Principal Investigator for the AHRQ-funded Multicenter Hospitalist Study, and is currently Principal Investigator for studies examining associations between surgical volume, care quality, and patient outcomes, as well as, improving appropriate use of perioperative beta-blockers to reduce risk. His teaching and clinical care focus is on hospital medicine and perioperative care.

Karla Kerlikowske, MD

Dr. Kerlikowske is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of California, San Francisco, Director of the Women Veteran's Comprehensive Health Center at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco and Associate Director of the Primary Care Research Fellowship. She is a senior faculty/mentor for the UCSF/San Francisco VA General Medicine and Women's Health Clinical Research Fellowships, UCSF/Kaiser Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health research program, and UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women's Health fellowship program. Dr. Kerlikowske's research focuses on the epidemiology of invasive breast cancer and ductal carcinoma in situ; factors that influence the accuracy of screening mammography; improving breast cancer risk assessment and breast cancer detection in high risk women; epidemiologic, biologic and genetic studies of breast density; and predictors of breast cancer recurrence. She uses three well-characterized study populations to address our research questions: 1) San Francisco Mammography Registry (http://mammography.ucsf.edu/SFMR/) 2) Bay Area ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) cohort, and 3) Breast Oncology Program tissue and outcomes database (http://cancer.ucsf.edu/breat_spore/tissue_core.php). She has published extensively on the accuracy, efficacy and cost-effectiveness of mammography by patient characteristics, epidemiology of DCIS, and epidemiology of breast density.

Dr. Hearst is Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Epidemiology & Biostatistics and Associate Director of the Primary Care Research Fellowship. Dr. Hearst.s main area of research has been HIV/AIDS. He founded and directed for ten years an international visiting scholars program to train AIDS researchers from developing countries. He has over 90 original publications in peer-reviewed journals. His work has focused on HIV, but has also included infant mortality, community-oriented primary care, care of terminal patients, hypertension, specialty choice among medical students, health policy, and long-term health effects of the military draft. He also is co-author of the popular textbook, Designing Clinical Research.
