Research interests: George F. Sawaya, MD is an Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF).  He holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. His main research interest is in cervical cancer screening with particular interest in screening older women, cost-effectiveness and cost-utility, novel approaches to population-based screening and methods of informed shared decision-making. In 2001, he served on the American Cancer Society Cervical Cancer Screening guidelines committee and has authored screening guidelines for UCSF and SFGH. He developed and teaches the curriculum in evidence-based medicine required for all medical students at UCSF that includes critical appraisal skills, systematic reviews, meta-analysis and the evaluation of diagnostic and screening tests. He is a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist based primarily at San Francisco General Hospital, where he is the Director of the Colposcopy and Cervical Dysplasia Clinic.
