Current Academic and/or Research Activities

As Chair of the Department of Medicine's Residency Diversity Committee and Director of Diversity for the Office of Graduate Medical Education he is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to increase the number students who are underrepresented in medicine among residency training programs at UCSF. He is the Social and Behavior Sciences (SBS) Social-Culture content leader working on developing and integrating cultural competency curriculum for the School of Medicine. He is a co-faculty advisor for the Latino Medical Student Association chapter at UCSF, and is the Faculty Advisor for Clinica Martin Baro, a student-run free clinic serving uninsured Latinos in San Francisco's Mission District.

Research / Scholarly Activities

He has an interest in cancer control and prevention among ethnic minority communities. He is the currently the recipient of an American Society Cancer Control Career Development Award for Primary Care Physicians exploring the impact of a culturally tailored media intervention on colorectal cancer screening in Latinos.
