Principal investigator, National Cancer Institute grant, Breast Cancer and Osteoporosis in Older Women. Dr. Bauer is also involved in a contract with Dr. Louise Brinton at the NCI examining environmental, hormonal, and genetic risk factors for breast cancer and osteoporosis. UCSF serves as the coordinating center for this 11 center study of 26,000 postmenopausal women initially screened to participate in the Fracture Intervention Trial. Surviving participants will be traced and UCSF will document the occurrence of incident breast, uterine and other cancers. Dr. Bauer is Chairman of the Executive Committee and is responsible for study design, procedures, data collection and analysis.

Co-investigator, Dynamics of Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC)(NIH, AG62106) a collaborative contract with the NIA to prospectively study body composition and incident disability in 3,000 men and women. UCSF serves as the coordinating center for this two center, eight year study. Dr. Bauer designed and supervises study-wide quality control, medication collection, quantitative ultrasound measurements and laboratory testing including measurement of thyroid function.

Principal Investigator, Dynamics of Health, Aging and Body Composition (Health ABC) Energy Expenditure Ancillary Study (NIH, AG62106). A collaborative contract with the NIA to measure resting and total energy expenditure with doubly labeled water in 500 Health ABC participants. UCSF serves as the coordinating center for this two center, three year study; Dr. Dale Schoeller at the University of Wisconsin is performing the DLW measurements. Dr. Bauer designed and supervises all aspects of this study.

Co-investigator and Director of Quantitative Ultrasound, Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (NIH, AG05407). PI: SR Cummings. A prospective, collaborative study of bone mass, neuromuscular function, and other potential risk factors for osteoporotic fractures in 9,600 women. UCSF serves as the coordinating center for this four-center study. Dr. Bauer designed and supervises all protocols and analyses related to quantitative ultrasound, biochemical markers of bone turnover and medication use.

Co-investigator, The Fracture Intervention Trial Long-Term Extension (FLEX)(Merck). PI: DM Black. A 5-year, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of designed to examine the efficacy and safety of oral alendronate versus placebo in 1,500 postmenopausal women who were originally allocated to alendronate in FIT (see below). Dr. Bauer designed and supervises fracture adjudication procedures and is Chairman of the Endpoints Committee.
